RB> I do. He (FDR) was the man who made sure you (and the rest of Europe)
RB> aren't speaking German nowadays.

There we go again.

The war in Europe was decided by the Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942 - 2 February 1943). It ended a full year and 4 months before D-Day, in the east the Nazi-German armies had already been on the run for 16 months. At that point the question was not "if" Nazi-Germany would be defeated but "when".

The Nazi-Germany advance had already been thwarted after the Battle of Britain which had been lost by the end of 1940. More than a year before Pearl Harbor.

With the loss of the 4 main capital ships Bismarck (1941), Tirpitz (disabled since the X-submarine attacks), Scharnhorst (Christmas 1943), Gneisenau (early 1942) then containment of Nazi-Germany was already complete ... they also lost Graf Spee early in 1939 with no significant successes and the heavy cruiser Hipper, only 5 days after it had been commissioned, during the invasion of Norway.

D-Day and the Americans merely sped-up the process.

Russia's role and merit has always been grossly been underrated, probably because of Hollywood.

RB> "Ich bin ein Berliner" (spoken phonetically, without understanding) was a
RB> cheap rhetorical trick the Germans unfortunately fell for. Better choose
RB> your heros with more discretion.

Actually, his complete statement read:

Two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was civis romanum sunt.
Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is "Ich bin ein
     Berliner!"

... reprised later in the speech as ...

All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and
therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words "Ich bin ein
    Berliner!"

You at that time were safely tucked away somewhere in the USA, while we in Belgium were a mere 600km away from the Russian Bear. I remember very well that as a 12yr old I listened with awe to Kennedy's speech June 26th 1963 because for us JFK was the only thing that stood between us and communist enslavement.

His assassination Nov.22nd of the same year pulled a blanket of fear over all of us. You weren't there Bob, you don't understand that situation.
