Bob,

RB>WD> Yes, I do. I'm not really that impressed by the American school
RB>WD> system. Especially the languages-part.

RB> Not surprising, in view of the fact that you never went to an American
RB> school. Nor do I speak of the present situation, but that when I went to
RB> school.

Several of my friends and some relatives went to the US for a year to enroll in a US highschool for the senior year. That program was sponsored by American Field Service (AFS). They invariably ended top of the class showing their tail lights. Same goes for Dutch youngsters, Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, German, Swiss, ... there generally is/was a grade-break between schools in the US and those in NW Europe where e.g. our junior year matched the US's senior year.

RB> The Latin and Greek emphasis in European schools was never a big hit in
RB> the States. Technology and science was and is. That's why most new
RB> developments in technical areas are in places like Silicon Valley and not
RB> in Brussels or even anywhere in Germany.

As much as I enjoyed the classic education, more technology would have been welcome though we are talking like 40-45 years ago ... no PCs, no smartphone ... it was a different world.

BTW, most of the innovative work in Silicon Valley was performed by non-Americans.

RB> The Belgians seem to believe that they became independent in 1830. Used
RB> to be part of the Netherlands. That's why so many Belgians still speak
RB> Flemish.

Tearing-away from the Netherlands was a stupidity. It never should have happened.
