I've had 2:292/854 AKA 2:2/0 down for some 2 days because of hardware issues. Some people were aware but I couldn't inform everyone.
A very odd situation.
Clicking sounds started to develop on the C-drive of the Fido-system, and that's never a good thing.
Everything was backed-up so I wasn't particularly worried but things started going wrong in a rapid pace with bad clusters appearing out of nowhere. One service after the other malfunctioned. It was a little bit, and I'm sorry for the comparison which is totally inappropriate, like the Twin Towers going down ... slow and steady.
So I decided to power-off while a controled shutdown was still an option.
The next thing was finding a reliable IDE-drive as it is a +/- older motherboard. Not as easy as you'd expect, regular computer stores don't have'm anymore, recycling centers don't know what you're talking about etc etc...
But, mission accomplished. there's another drive, I've even got a spare one now (of which the previous owner had not deleted his porn ... so bide with me if it takes a bit long ... ;-) ).
Instead of providing a duct-tape solution and quick restart, I decided to overhaul the complete thing, revise back-up procedures, more of that kind, and I'm about ready to be back in business.
The only thing I'm still fighting is the DNS-forwarding which complains, but I'll start by sending this out, so y'all will know I'm still alive ... some will find that a good thing, some will think it's a missed opportunity... Can't have it all in life. Sorry.
