I have this on a T-shirt, I wore it every time my daughters were visited by a suitor trying to impress me. It's popular "father of the girlfriend" lore.
You should see the contract I made every guy sign wanting to take one of my princesses out for the evening. My youngest daughter was overheard telling a guy "Don't lie to my dad, he will know instantly, tell you he knows and then kick you out".

"You are dead meat" is common American-English lingo for "you are in trouble". Fidonet participants are supposed to be versed in english. I don't see the problem.

What context? I merely cited the first 4 lines of the song that rocketed Mary Hopkin to fame in 1968.
It's actually an old Russian Folk Song. I think anyone can relate in time to this lyric the bravado of youth, it's endless possibilities tempered by life's realities till one day we stop and look back with this heartfelt nostalgia and wonder how we got to this place in time.
So why do some pharts here need to inject a meaning into my words which wasn't there to start with? "Those were the days" is just one of the greatest songs of the 60-ies ... when were you born again?
But if you want some genuine \%/D humour:
Tomorrow we're celebrating my dad's 97th birthday and I ordered a specially made cake for the occasion. The lady asked me "And you will be paying for this when you pick it up?" to which I answered "Only if I have to" ...
I also have a T-shirt with the text " In Cod We Trust " ... it features a big fish. I love wearing it when visiting my Mormon friends.
