I would doubt that strongly in an American school. Over the years I've discussed certain texts with Americans who supposedly got Latin and it was laughable. It starts with a complete wrong translation of "Panem et circenses" ... after that I stop discussing.
In general, I have never been impressed by foreign language studies in American schools. I'm a latinist, meaning my main subject was latin ... 7 hrs a week for 6 consecutive years.

The original "De Bello Gallico" even featured a map of Gallia Transalpina with a clearly marked area called "Belgica". Now generally considered Belgium, although it was more than 3x as large and went as far south as Lutetia (Paris).
Belgica consisted of 5 main tribes: the Eburonii, Nervii, Morini, Aduatuci and Menapii. That's my history, Bob ... There was no tribe called "The Belgians" ... that's a football team ranked first on the FIFA list.
