Well, my wife and our granddaughter (6) left for Tenerife today with Ryanair from the airport of Charleroi. Had to be there 4 (hours) prior to departure.
2km before the terminal we were stopped by police and heavily armed military who searched the car without touching the gabage, it took about an hour to pass that roadblock. Then headed to the terminal.
When we got to the terminal, we were stopped again because only ticketed passengers were allowed in, no family members (that means not me, not my daughter [granddaughter's mam] who wasn't going along). We hugged and they walked in, past 2 heavily armed military with machine guns ... without their bagage inspected.
Conclusion: only if you had bagage with you possibly containing a bomb were you allowed inside. If you were without any means of causing harm you had to stay outside.
