My grandfather had dual nationality and in 1914 opted to be Dutch in order to escape military service in WW1 [the Netherlands were neutral].
However, he worked in port with heavy horses pulling loads and was requisitioned by the military to transport guns and ammo for the duration of the war. He suffered from a gas attack and was unable to work anymore after the war. As a Dutch national he drew a Belgian military invalid's pension. 26 years later, as a result of that gas attack, he coughed-out his lungs and died a terrible death.
