I disagree here wholeheartedly.
From my point of view british politics caused it. Everything that was "good" was done by the local government, and everything "bad" was mandated by the EU. That is quit a convenient way to act for local politics, but it will backfire tremendously, as the UK just prooved.
Also I disagree about the inflexibility. They heeded every blackmail that the UK threw at them. There is by far no other country with that many exceptions.
It is sad that the UK voted as they did, but now you need to make the transtition as fast as possible, to limit the damage on the economy of europe and the UK.
