I think everything depens on that path. In the history, when only mailing hours were used, each hop was one day ;-)
Actually my uplink was so kind to accept setup "whenever there is something for my node he is pushing it" (and I have same setup, thank to binkd).
So for example, nowadays is possible for me to exchange 10 messages in 10 minutes within one echo conversation ;-)
And - whenever I run ConnectBot on Android, I have fresh netmail/echomail (via GoldEd).
