Good ${greeting_time}, Robert!

22 Jul 2018 12:55:22, you wrote to Stas Mishchenkov:

OMFG! Rob, I'm very sorry to ask, but... how old are you? 70 or so?

Well, being 40 y.o. I've started to learn Chinese (and even got some tiny success), but you seem to be significantly older.

RB> and did some technical translations into English. But my guess

Most of our translators did that. Obviously enough, to translate poetry one needs to be a poet thyself.

[recalling my own experience] At least somewhere deeply in the soul :-)

RB>>> I've seen several translations of various English works in German
RB>>> that were very good indeed. One of the best was of "My Fair Lady"
RB>>> (The film with Rex Harrison and Audry Hepburn)....
SM>> What about movies, we have disgusting translation of "Jesus Christ
SM>> Superstar"

Not that disgusting... It's inexact (serious disadvantage for a translation), but it fits the play and is funny.

RB> To my shame, I am simply not capable of comparing Russian
RB> translations to an English text. And particularly Rusian translations
RB> of literary English. That's about as complex as things get. I do have
RB> to admire, once again, your command of the English langusge. I wish
RB> my Russian were even a tenth as good.

You are welcome to come and practice :-)

RB> I only speak English and German, and a bit of French.

I wish I were such a polyglot... Well, I can understand (and, after a week or so, speak) any Slavic language and most of Germanic (excluding Scandinavian), but I still have a big gap in German :-/
