There are people who prefer to create a properly configured and reliable system no matter how important it is. And there are people who want something to "just work". Entering IP/host is quick and easy while configuring system to utilize nodelist and update it regularly is complex. Fidonet was never taken seriously by majority. And technical expertise was never a requirement for running a node.
