That should work. Your CHRS kludge is definetly correct for that goal. As for converting UTF-8 characters using Golded I am under the impression that it doesn't work as you have pointed out and is evidenced in this echo. Thus I am assuming - probably correctly - that the "CHRS: UTF-8 4" is bogus kludge when origination from Golded unlike WeBeBashing's "CHRS: UTF-8 4" kludge which indeed has been demonstrated in this and a couple other echo's to be perfect. I've seen a few others get it right too but not much in the way of traffic from them. I have doubts UTF-8 will catch on that much in Fidonet but if so then I am definetly ready for action.
BTW utf-8 character output on binkd also works as long as it is viewed in a utf-8 terminal. Looks really good too. :::evil grin:::
