Hey Kees!

KvE> I seldom use characters above 0x8F

I am guesstimating that ~90% of the characters in play here lie between 0x30 - 0x7a and most of the remaining ~10% are 0x20 (space) and 0x0a (linefeed).  A few others in scripting but not many of those in text messaging such as this.

KvE> choice between the Devil and de deep blue see

Something like that.  It depends on what the goal is.  I am certainly not adverse to the extra bytes utf-8 will add to text messaging in Fidonet if indeed that is a desirable goal.  I am confident that I have proved it can and does work, as well as supports many, many, many more possibilities than the current fts-5003 supports.  However I'd be more inclined to favour it as utf-8 messaging rather than conversion to ANY 8-bit codepage.  I think doing 8-bit conversion is just asking for trouble.  It can work but relies far too much on everyone cooperating and only sending the correct utf-8 characters that can be successfully converted to the targetted codepage.  What do you think the odds are for that ideology being successful?  Myself I have very serious doubts.

KvE> although my friends in R24 and I are all from a generation
KvE> that did not live in those nasty times.

I can and will confirm your above usage of 'nasty times'.  They are still with us despite the choices that exist today to help correct the nastiness.

Life is good,
Maurice
