For shame!!! Although it seems to work there is probably a better way to do the same without having to manually remove any unwanted leakage. Check out;
I know at least one Fidonet sysop using that version, albiet on linux, with golded to accomplish the exact same thing you are doing. The above is a win32 version and doesn't require compilation. I saw some help on how to get it working on XP. Not sure about other windows releases. Anyhow I think that is a better option for getting golded to cooperate with utf-8. If you decide to give it a go I'd appreciate hearing about it, good or bad. I am sure there are other win32 sysops out there that might be highly interested in such a thing. One thing for sure is that their current utf-8 strategy sucks BIG time. ;-)
