AV>> Well, people from R45, R46 and R50 will be able to read those AV>> names... What about others?
I can read 99% of all names just fine from here. I have not yet gotten Cyrillic or Greek working in GoldEd, but I'm guessing that's something related to GoldEd, since if I export to a text file and read it in my console editor (nano) it displays just fine.
MV> Nicholas Boel, how do I pronounce that? As rhymes on "cool" or as MV> rhymes on "Noel"? Ross Cassel? As the German "Kassel" or as in rhymes MV> on "Inspector Dalziel"?
How did I get brought into this? :)
Anyways, if it matters any, my last name is actually spelled 'Boël' and rhymes with 'Noël'. I have been learning the whole UTF-8 world recently since most Linux distrobutions are now standardizing it.
MV> Do you think it is fair that I can write my name exactly as it is MV> written in my own language and that you can not?
I think everyone should be able to write their names exactly how they are spelled. I'm not sure as to why this is such a huge argument on Fidonet, but UTF-8, Latin-1 (8859-1), koi8-r, and every other widely used charset out there should have been dealt with when Fidonet became an international network. The rules of English speaking only echos can still hold their weight, but no charset or codepage has ever been deemed the *only* one you are allowed to use.
It has been said in the past, people that don't care to upgrade or re-configure their software to this day and age will see garbage on their screens. So what? It doesn't break anything on their end, except their visual experience. That is not the fault of people wanting to keep their software in the current century in regards to international keymaps, charsets, and codepages. *shrug*
If I could ever get GoldEd to display Cyrillic, Greek, and whatever else it doesn't show properly, I may some day be interested in carrying some Russian echos here, while maybe even trying to learn to read it. I'm glad there's still currently maintained software out there in regards to BBSs and FTN related stuff. Advancement in the software is what keeps me interested in this hobby!
Regards, Nick
