he didn't say to the right hand side of a quote... he said of a quote prefix... in other words, instead of

   >>> sh>

it should have been adding the > chars to the end of the original prefix like this

   sh>>>>

JD> I is always on the left.  The word "found" can hardly be attributed to
JD> Michiel, seeing the context it is shown in.

no, SH wrote that (indicated by "SH>") and michiel quoted it ( ">" char before "SH>") then someone else quoted it which wrapped the word "found" to the next line but prepended the ">" based portion and left out the "SH>" portion... probably because it is not checking for a space beteen the first ">" character and the last one found in "SH>"... some systems add a space before or after their quote prefix which should be looked for and handled properly... there could be more than two letters instead of initials, too...michiel has four initials (mvdv) whereas one might need to do something like

  JohnD>> blah blah blah
  JaneD> blerg blerg blerg
  hahaha i hear ya there

to separate quotes by different people with the same initials... the above format should be retained and not butcherd either... even when manually editing the quote prefix which may force a paragraph reflow from line wrap... that edit should carry over in the wrapping and reflowing process...

the evolved defacto format for quoting in fidonet has evolved...

 1. reflow paragraphs instead of truncating lines when quoting...
 2. recognise older quotes and reflow the paragraph properly recognizing those older quotes and keeping them together properly...
 3. when recognizing older quotes, append one ">" to the end of that existing quote to show that it is quoted again...
 4. only add a quote prefix when reflowing and quoting a newly quoted paragraph...
