ac> Ironically GoldED makes a mess of this when quoting it!

damn, it sure did, didn't it :)

ac> Geez. 2016 and we still can't get quoting right.

it has always been a PITA... especially with different quote prefixes being used... i don't blame alexey and others for wanting to standardize quoting prefixes but it doesn't work with other quoting methods...

ac> I just checked and both timEd and Msged do it properly.

i checked my ancient TimED, too... yes, it does do it write because it doesn't strip on the explicit CR at the end of each numbered line which effectively makes it a paragraph with no blank line following it...

ac> IIRC years ago Carol Shenkenberger's software had a problem truncating
ac> lines when quoting messages?

yes... that software was taking the easy way out and just truncating lines after prepending the quote prefix... there was no reflowing being done at all... there's still a lot of that out there, too...

ac> Anyway, originally I was just going to point out that the reflow is

ac> mentioned.

i don't know about traditionally but i've seen it done at 72... some software allows for a right margin setting for quoted material but you are right in that it should be mentioned... the only ugly part is when reading quotes on a wide terminal... reflowed quotes using hard CRs at the end of each line doesn't get reflowed during display... at least not in GED+... but there's a difference between quoting for replying and just displaying... the pit gets much deeper from there ;)
