ml>> yup... i wasn't ever aware of that problem, though... my dealings ml>> with WWIVTOSS were back in the '90s when Planet Connect was all the ml>> rage... that's what this node was trying to toss with WWIVTOSS and ml>> since it was a subscription service, it was literally costing him $$$ ml>> each day that it didn't work...
MH> I remember the Planet Connect days... We had one NET261 node here in MH> MD pull everything in and the rest of the nodes contributed to the MH> CRP. That was the norm until the Internet when the CRP was no longer MH> needed.
yeah... there was a proliferation of "little hitlers" back in the day that tried to force folks to pull mail from their systems and make other's pay for the service... very few understood or realized that they could set up any links they wanted to with any other system they could negotiate a contract with... planet connect helped to break that misbegotten belief and lie that so many were told...
when i first became the NC of net3634, i had to deal with a PC against the former NEC who was the host of a planet connect connection... the problem was that some members of net3634 had created and joined a coop that was fed from planet connect... that coop was outside of the net3634 operations... because of that, i had to toss out the PC... while i felt for those filing the PC my habds were tied since the coop was outside of net3634 and fidonet... much like the echolist and backbones were outside of fidonet...
ml>> it wasn't able to do PKTs back when i was exposed to it... that it ml>> can now is a good thing :)
MH> That must have been one of the really early versions of the program.
i honestly do not remember if this was in the late '80s or mid '90s...
ml>> spawn? as in spawning another task to do the actual writing to the ml>> message base? :/
MH> Yes, basically kicking off the WWIVnet network software programs from MH> within WWIVTOSS.
ewwwww... that's ugly... WWIVTOSS should, IMHO, speak both "languages" and contain all the routines needed to talk to FTNs as well as WWIV networks... especially if it is to talk to both sides of the fence... again, IMHO...
