you really should take a closer look at strftime, then... somewhere inside it, there is a conversion from string to numerics and back to string again otherwise the hour in the time could not be added or subtracted from the hour in the offest string... think about it... just saying...

strftime /HAS/ to convert from string to digit and back /somewhere/ within itself or a routine it makes use of... there's no other way to do math, my friend ;)
