I thought we were talking about Fidonet messages here? What you use on your personal computer is of course up to you, but to extrapolate your local gaining into what you gain in a Fidonet message is rather irrelevant, isn't it?

And you missed the fact that Michiel (as well as I and everybody else with a modern FTN system) can write Cyrillic text without transliterating it, that you suggested had to be done in another message.
And I can even spell my name properly at the same time: Björn Felten. You cannot do that with KOI8...
The sooner we all move to UTF8, like internet did many years ago, we'll get a true international Fidonet.
