On my site that is only a problem for text, that is quooted from others. I seldom use characters above 0x8F, it is possible if I use different terminal software, but then other key combinations for Golded will not work. It is a bit of a choice between the Devil and de deep blue see.
I communicate with people in R24, but they have been proctical early in the computer age when characterset were limited. They have no problem with putting an "e" after every character that should have a diaresis. For the "Ringel S" it is customary to use "ss". That still gives an itch in my fingers, although my friends in R24 and I are all from a generation that did not live in those nasty times.
