Actually I have seen two six or seven years ago. Last year I spoke to someone who now lives in Sweden and hunts them. He said in summer when they have young with them, the stay deeper in the woods.
As for smashing into your car, further north those raindeer are a real pest. The calves cross the road whenever they like, the the mother will follow right behind them. They don't care about anything on the road.

We call them "Eland", it seems the last one that was seen here was in 1025.
