The primary function of the nodelist is to tell Fidonet mailers how to connect to other nodes. TTBOMK all my softeware that uses the nodelist for this purpose is totally ignorant of what is in the sysop name field or the field for the location.

That's one. My POTS mailer - InterMail - is still up and running. Ok, it is not actually used any more to connect to other nodes, except for an occasional test. But it's accompanying nodelist compiler still runs every time a new nodelist comes in.
My IP mailer - Irex - also uses the nodelist. Golded does a nodelist lookup when sending netmail. My pointlist assembler uses the nodelist to see if the Boss node is present in the nodelist.
Yes, my system uses the nodelist.
But the machines don't care how the names are spelled.
