Well, for many OSes, the addition of V6 meant that if not before, now you would be forced to handle multiple addresses on the same interface, since v4+v6 would always mean two, and if you have any kind of configured v6 (slaac or dhcpv6 or manual) you get at least three since v6 will always make one of those fe80::, so by that time you would probably code it to handle 1,2,3..10 addresses on the same interface the same way.
