Or that downstream router may not just serve my IOT gadgets, but also me and my wife's car when parked on the driveway and connected by WiFi. The cars are complicated enough to each warrant their own subnet. So the downstream router would request a /62 from the main router and construct four /64 subnets, one for the IOT gadgets, two for the two cars and one to spare.
I get the idea, but we still need to discard a lot of "IPv4 think"..
