I disagree. While there will probably remain some isolated IPv4 islands, it will disappear in te sense that the T-Ford has disappeared. Of course there are still some in museums and there problably are still a few that can drive, you do not see them on public roads any more.
IPv4 will disappear from the public internet and I expect there is a fair chance that I will live to see it.
Once IPv6 gains critical mass, it can go pretty fast. Already ISPs are only offering Ds-Lite is many places. Than means IPv4 is still there, but it s only used to connect to systems that can do no IPv6 yet. Already some cloud providers are going IPv6 only for their internal network.
The reason is that it is much simpler to maintain a single stack environment than a dual stack environent. And with IPv6 only environments we will see the emergence if IPv6 only routers. Why maintain dual stack in routers if only the IPv6 part will be used?
I expect IPv6 to become the dominant protocal in five to ten years and once that turning point is reached, IPv4 will peter out pretty fast and it will be gone from the public internet in less than 20 years.
