If it is on an IPv4 only connection, attempting to connect via IPv6 will surely fail. It could use the INO4 flag to decide to not even try...
And decide to route the mail instead or put it on Hold for the other party to pick up.

Any decent software allows for overrides. The nodelist is for making connections without previous arrangements.
