At least you have the option of fibre. The NBN (National Broadband Network) rollout here isn't bringing fibre to my part of town. It's going to be years before we see it. That's why last november we moved from a ADLS2+ connection (9mb down/800k up) to a HFC connection of 25mb down/5mb up.
There is compettition here between ISP's. The main thing is weather the two main telco's (Telstra/Optus) has gear in the local exchange to give people ADSL.
The HFC network's dont cover a lot of places. Mainly capital's and a few regional towns that are big enough. (ie: Ballarat [my town], Geelong. iiNet now ownes the network here).
