On 05/02/15, Michiel van der Vlist pondered and said...

Mv> New Zealand resides under APNIC and APNIC is the first RIR to have run
Mv> out of IPv4 addresses. That was four years ago on 19 April 2011. So from
Mv> then on ISPs had to make do with whatever IPv4 address space they had in
Mv> stock. It is not unthinkable that the ISP you have in mind no longer has
Mv> IPv4 addresses available and that they will not give you a globally
Mv> routable IPv4 address but an address in the private or CGNAT range.

Joy.. ok thanks Michiel. I will ask them next week and see what I can find
out. At present I cannot obtain a static IP without paying a lot of $$
monthly and that's something I'm not prepared to do at this stage.. so I
expect that may cause issues?

Mv> You may end up with the doubtfull honour of being the first Fidonet
Mv> sysop that runs a true IPv6 only node.

Hmm.. not sure but I suspect not likely... will let you know :)

Mv> If they do not offer native IPv6 yet, it is no big deal. You can run a
Mv> tunnel. There is he.net and SIxXs. He.net are easy, but you must have a
Mv> globally routable IPv4 address. SixXs offers a tunnel type called AYAIYA
Mv> that can be run from behind a NAT. So you can even have full IPv6
Mv> connectivity without a globally routable IPv4 address. Unfortunately the
Mv> SixXs head honcho, Jeroen Massaar is a bit of a character...

Nick was just mentioning those options, I'll take a look at both sites
tonight.

Mv> Cheers, Michiel

Thanks Michiel

Best, Paul
