JD> I've been told that English, for a newcomer, and not a student of
JD> languages, is one of the more difficult languages to learn.

The beauty of English is that it's so easy to get the first part going. In Sweden we start studying English in the sixth grade, but already then most kids here are quite fluent in English thanks to all the movies and TV series (we never dub them, but text them).

Nah, the problem is that there seems to be more exceptions than rules in English. Both French and German (and related languages) have a rather logical set of grammar rules. English doesn't.

Add to that the US bastardization of the language, that we get the most here via TV and the movies, and it becomes an almost impossible task to structure the language into a proper set of rules like we are used to from our native language.
