I was taught at school that French pronunciation followed a strict set of rules but, having lived over there for some time each year and having watched a good deal of French television, I find that is not the case, and I'm not referring to regional dialects

There will always be change in a living language, whether we like it or not. The trouble is that it is happening much more quickly now because of television and now the Internet. I really do have difficulty sometimes in understanding what people in their teens and twenties are saying.
