In the UK it really doesn't seem to matter. Schoolchildren are not taught grammar or spelling and, as a result one sees the most appalling errors.
Even today, while I was returning from church (I was playing for a service some 25 miles away from home) and got stuck in a queue, I turned the car radio on for the BBC news and the presenter said something like, "her and her children were <doing something>". I was so appalled that I didn't actually hear what "her" was actually doing! If even the BBC can't "speak proper" what chance is there that the rest of the population will. I'm glad I've retired from teaching. It got to the point where the pupils were telling *me* I was wrong!

Well, yes. My children have got pretty good jobs: a school-teacher (of philosophy and comparative religion), a London solicitor, and an Anglican clergyperson among them. But can they all spell and speak correctly? Well ....... :-|

I'm not going to try with my six grandchildren. It'll be counter-productive. Anyway, the eldest boy is in the military, training to do bomb disposal. I think I'd rather he did the job safely than pester him with correct English!!
