Yes, feelings run high on both sides of the argument.

I see them regularly at Portsmouth and Caen/Ouistreham on my monthly trips to France. And even at Ouistreham, let alone Calais, there are groups of people trying to hitch a lift on lorries into the UK as illegal immigrants. The problem has not gone away. It's just spreading further down the coast. And this is what people see as they go across the Channel which has made them anti-EU.

I don't think so. I think she really is genuinely trying to do the best she can for the country. Her problem is that she is not a born diplomat, not very creative, and doesn't have the personality to persuade people. In fact she is the wrong person for this kind of job, There are others who would be better but they simply aren't trusted.

The French do have local representatives in both the senate and the chamber of deputies, and they really do work for the interests of their own district. In the UK only the Commons (the Lower House) represent us locally.
