Björn, Thank you for your spirited defence of our position. You have put the situation succinctly - better than I could have done it for myself.
Unfortunately Michiel has only a very superficial understanding of the situation which hasn't deepened in the last three years as he is still trotting out the same old one-line clichés. And when I have tried to put the British point of view he hasn't been prepared to listen which is why I don't bother to reply to him any more. It's a waste of effort!
My own view of Michiel's position, and forgive me if I'm wrong, is that his country does not carry enough weight to be effective in arguing for things that they perceive to be wrong in the running of the EU. He (rather patronisingly) says that we "no longer rule the waves". Of course we don't - we know that we haven't done so for more than a hundred years - but we are still strong enough, because we have a strong economy, to be able to stand up for what we consider to be unfair treatment and, with Margaret Thatcher, we were able to make our voices heard and understood.
Unlike Michiel, I'll won't repeat ad nauseam the arguments that I have put here in the past apart from this: three years ago a lot of people were very concerned about a number of things which we were told could be put right by withdrawing from the EU. In fact most of what we were told were simply downright lies. Those that were not in favour of withdrawing from the EU could not make themselves heard above the noise from the other side and so were unable to draw attention to the benefits we have of being part of the EU. Three years of debate and negotiation have revealed those benefits which I believe have now contributed to a sea change in the opinion of the electorate. The outcome three years ago of the referendum was that 52% of voters wanted to leave and 48% wanted to stay. From the outset we had a divided country. (You might also say it was a darned silly referendum to hold!)
I believe that, now we know much more about the benefits of being in the EU, if we hold another referendum the position will be very much changed and that we would vote convincingly to stay in the EU.
Unfortunately the jobsworth politicians who want us to leave are making a virtue of the argument that, if we nullify the result of the first referendum, then that will be the end of democracy in the UK.
When has democracy ever been truly democratic?
