In England people who have very little self-confidence would read Stephen Potter's books and try to use his "ploys" to make themselves appear superior. The rest of us found them hugely amusing.

I used to keep some of his books in a prominent place on my bookshelves and see which of my visitors would pick them up and read them. And then to see which of them asked if they could borrow them!

I was very naughty in that respect!
