That's right! When credit cards were first introduced, that's how it worked. The retailer had a little machine with a roller which passed over the card and the slip of paper. It left an imprint of the long card number and the expiry date on the slip of paper and you had to sign it. The retailer then checked that your signature and the one on the back of the card were the same. Not very secure - forgers had a great time with stolen cards.

They first appeared in the UK in 1972. My bank sent me one. called "Access" and the advertising slogan was "Takes the waiting out of wanting." I didn't ask for it and didn't want it but my bank sent it to me. I kept it in my wallet for months before I started using it. The slogan put me off because it was encouraging me to spend more than I could afford. What was wrong with saving up for what I wanted?

What I don't remember was when the magnetic stripe was introduced which had the card details on it and which was read by an electronic terminal. Was it always there or was it introduced subsequently?

I think it was some time in the 1980s when they brought in "CHIP'n'PIN" (chip and PIN) which replaced the magnetic stripe and which was thought to be a lot more secure. CHIP'n'PIN was how they marketed it here - a sound byte which they hoped we'd remember! And that is basically how cards work today except that they now have the addition of being contactless, so all you need to do is to wave your card over the terminal.

I wonder what the next development will be ...

David
