Yeah, strange that you can actually own a piece of the planet that's been around for 4,5 milliard years. In some countries you own not only the surface but basically everything from the centre of the planet and vertically all the way to the stars.
OK, that you want to feel a certain amount of security by claiming ownership, after all you usually don't want strangers invading your little part that you occupy, but leaving it all to the market and the speculators is the main reason fore housing to grow out of proportion. E.g. when we bought our house in 1974 we paid 48k SEK for it, now it's worth more than five million, of which circa two is the land alone.
I wonder if it would work if the law said that the land always would have a fixed value per sqm. At least it would prevent the most absurd increases in property cost and stifle the worst housing bubbles...
