A smiley is there to avoid any misunderstanding of the writer's intentions. How else would one know whether to take a remark at face value?

Now that's interesting. Such programmes as Fawlty Towers seem to translate well into other languages, but I don't know if foreign audiences laugh at the same content as we do. The British (well, some of them) laugh at the subtlety of the humour while others simply laugh at the slapstick. And it's the slapstick which translates well which is why Fawlty Towers is exported. The Two Ronnies' humour is almost entirely to do with the subtlety of the English language with very little slapstick. Morecambe and Wise ..... well, their humour is really to do with the absurd but with very little subtlety. Perhaps that's why you haven't heard of either of them because they don't travel well.
Sorry, must get back to Wimbledon. (Now, do I mean that I am going to Wimbledon or am I simply going to watch more tennis on the television?)
