With linux, people tend to want to find the right distro to match the pc/hardware they want supported. So, yes.
In my case, I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that runs Puppy linux beautifully and surpasses in performance what the original XP could do.
I also have an eMachines DT that performed differently depending on which distro I tried. After finding the right distro, I wouldn't need to change the version if everything worked just right.
