He wrote the original FidoNet software to exchange mail among BBSes. Without that pivot point, no network wouldn't have started off, FidoNet protocols would have neither been defined nor implemented.
I don't see what the actual programming language would have to do with that. But as the software ran under MS-DOS and required drivers, most parts were certainly written in C.
