Exactly. You just proved my point: Everything else is purely hypothetical, and
it would have become something else, not FidoNet.

Mind your usage of the conjunctive (irrealis) here.

So did Karl Jatho, but you're missing the point here. Jennings not only put together the technology, he also defined the protocols and implemented them. Going back to your aviation example, that's more like putting together the first flying plane, inventing Morse code for communication with the airport, and founding the first airline.
Of course, somebody else could have done similar things (and some did), but the outcome would have been different. You and me certainly wouldn't be here talking about this.
