We have a lot of "old sources" that are not 100% verifiable. I still would call them "documents".

However, just look at Troy: it has been "mythic" for centuries (if not millennia), existing for us mostly only in Homer's poetry. Still, it could be found and "verified" after all that time.

As I said: don't take all that too literal, there certainly is a lot of myth in the story. There are several other theories (volcanoes, impacts, earthquakes, glacial runs...). A imho very interesting one is the breaking of the dam to the black sea. Meanwhile it was verified that the black sea was a sweet water lake up to the end of the last ice age.
Anyway, my point was that all this kind of long-ago catastrophies usually lead to "mystified" reports. However, as I said I wouldn't think that it is completely made up just because there are mythical parts in the report.
