Really? My impression was that the Acts of Union (1707) state something like... I need to look that up... "United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain". See https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Act_of_Union_1707#Article_1_(name_of_the_new_ki ngdom)
This leads me to think that "Great Britain" is the name of a political entity as well.
