Flensburg is located in the very North of Germany at the Baltic Sea, close to the Danish border.

The colloquial Low German ("Plattdeutsch") spoken in several varieties in Northern parts of Germany is actually resembling English as both languages have their roots in North Sea Germanic dialects. Swabian, on the other hand, belongs to the Upper German dialects, and is quite a different thing. So, yes, I can understand that this was quite a change for him. :)
Germany as a country didn't exist until less than 150 years ago, and before that there were at times several hundred of smaller "countries" in the same place. All with their own sovereign, their own laws, their own measures (for weight, volume, etc.), their own currency, and also their own dialect. Modern standard German is a Koin language that was basically started with Martin Luther's Bible translation in the 16th century.
