nederlands has the same root than german, french, english an all other lower francophilied languages. It is an older 'slang' of francophilied languages as they where used before oxford-english, official-french and todays german called 'hochdeutsch'.
Currently most of the nederland speaking people are able to understand lower saxony german, and vice versa.
german-romanian roots of the language got the same root-language than german-francophiled language.
Sorry Ward, but we all got the same root-language in middle europe. Even some russian-slangs, and dankses also some swedish slangs have the same root.
BTW: I'm able to understand most of nederlands-language, because my grandparents used a old german, called 'Plattdeutsch'. A quite old language in lower saxony of germany.
