Hi Ward,

yup .. the  segment.* naming convention did the trick,
but also to bypass all makenl_ng check routines on any
daynumbered extensions and any cleanup functionality mechanism.
To import any segments starting the body filename
a. ignoring any daynumbers, despite the fact the extension is in
   sync to the offset daynumber or not
b. also allows unnumbered extensions eg .lst, .upd

Using .* in the control file also means, you have to take care manualy to do a cleanup of older segments. In one more test (after sent my NM report)
I've also tested a duplication of segments by different daynumbers
zone1.236, zone1.243, zone1.250  in the working directory ...
and the winner is ?

.
.
.

Zone1.236  ..   the OLDEST segment (!)    :-P

d 09-Sep-2013 11:14:28 makenl[3012] searchlistfile(): found 'ZONE1.236'
d 09-Sep-2013 11:14:28 makenl[3012] myfnmerge: drive='(null)'
dir='r:\makenl\files' name='ZONE1.236' ext='(null)'
d 09-Sep-2013 11:14:28 makenl[3012] searchlistfile: justthisfile,
foundfile='r:\makenl\files\ZONE1.236'
+ 09-Sep-2013 11:14:28 makenl[3012] Processing Zone        1 -- file
'r:\makenl\files\ZONE1.236'

What does this mean for processing:
a. for the master processing of every Fridays nodelist the default
   makenl behavior should be used with a cleanup of older files
   with segment. naming convention in the control file and the
   cleanup statement
   *C's at lower level to be advised to use offset daynumber extensions
   by placing a PUBLISH Friday (if not automaticly processed)
   makenl control files without PUBLISH Friday still uses PUBLISH day
   Friday, but there are other compilers around ...
b. for the daily list processing a copy to another working directory
   should be implemented by cleaning the daily list working directory
   and copying over all segments from the Fridays master working
   directory and using its own dailylist control file with segment.*
   extensions and each weekdays PUBLISH day. This makes probably
   6 or 7 control files

The result is:
a. a clean master working directory for the weekly Friday nodelist
   with cleaning up of older segments to current offset daynumber
   for all files that haven't been updated by a fresh new upload,
   older files removed, only the newest file picked up
   (in contrast see above zone1 experiment)
-and-
b. a clean working directory for the daily list processing with
   the newly uploaded segments
