That's looking at it from the island POV. I was looking at it from the continental POV and what I see is a failed marriage. The times that Brittania ruled the waves is long gone. Now the UK is no more than a middle sized country in a union with 27 others. As long a the UK does not adapt to that new reality it is not in our - the 27 - interest to continue the relationship.
