Hello Björn,

On Tuesday May 21 2019 21:23, you wrote to me:

I didn't say it, I typed it. How? By pushing keys on my keyboard of course. :)

BF> and in the next sentence that the EU would be better off without the
BF> United Kingdom?

Before the referendum, I would have said that it would be better for all concerned if they had chosen to remain. But now that they have choosen to leave, the situation has changed.

The EU would have been stronger with a loyal powerful nation as the UK a a member. But members that don't really want to be in and are not loyal weaken the union.

Yes, it will raise the contribution of the remaining members when the UK leaves. Despite that I say that given the situation that they voted to leave, and considering the ruined relationship between the UK and the EU, it is better for both that they go their own way. I see it as a marriage that has gone sour. Better to get it over with and move on.

1) There is more to life than just money. The value of many things are hard to express in money. I am very happy I live in a country that has not been at war since I was born.  At least not on its own territory. How do I express that in money?

2) The figures on the balance sheet are just that: Figures on a balance sheet. They are incomplete. As I said it is not a zero sum game. There are hidden costs and benefits. The very fact that traders do not know how this will work out has already cost us a lot. An unsure situation is very bad for bussines.

3) This whole argument about net contributors and net receivers is a shame. Peole moaning about their country being a net contributor should be ashamed of themselves!

3a) For starters it is peanuts. My part of the contribution to the EU is just under EUR 200 a year. That is in the order of 1% of the total amount of taxes I pay each year. Income tax, real estate tax, tax on fuel, VAT on consumer goods, Provincial taxes, municipal taxes, etc, etc etc. EUR 200 a year is peanuts!

3b) Parting with a bigger slice of the pie is not a problem if the pie itself gets bigger. As I said, it is not a zero sum game. Net contributors are still better of sharing the bigger pie with others, than having a small pie all for themselves.

3c) Up until 1995 The Netherlands was a net receiver. Everybody happy. We received money from the EEC and later the EU because counties richer than us - the net contibutors - helped us boost our economy. It worked. We became a  rich country with a smootly running economy. We are a rich country, compared to the majority of other countries we live in luxury. We got where we are because of the EU. Moaning about the fact that we are now a net contributor and help countries in the situation we were 25 years ago is hypocratic. Anyone moaning about it should be ashamed!

Cheers, Michiel
