Hello David,

On Monday October 14 2019 23:20, you wrote to me:

Hmm.. "Closing ranks" is not as firmly embedded in the culture of most continental European countries as it is in the Brittish. If Boris Johnson is bluffing and that aspect is part of his bluff, then he may make a mistake. Yes, so far the EU has closed ranks. Which is remarkable in itself, they have seldom been so united.

Which means that there still is a chance that a miracle will happen. But the EU is not Eton, when push comes to shove, each member will balance its own interest against that of the herd.

DR> The EU is keeping this going to support Ireland, not to pander to the
DR> UK.

They sure will support Ireland. They will go at great length to avoid Ireland getting into "troubles" again. But not at all cost. Ireland is not the only EU member with interests. And once again, an extension requires a unanimous decision by all 27 members. It takes just ONE dissident member that considers "getting it over with" the lesser evil and that breaks the ranks to block an extension.

Cheers, Michiel
