I didn't renew it when it expired some 15 years ago. For a new one I had to submit fingerprints. Some that should be for criminals only IMNSHO. An identity card is enough for the entire EU and some more and fingerprints are not needed for an identity card. This is probably a rear guard skirmishm but so far I have avoided submitting fingerprints.
I have no plans to travel outside the EU for the foreseeable future. If I change my mind, I can always apply for a passport later.

I wonder if that will still be the case after 31 december. I am not optimistic about the EU and the UK reaching an agreement. In the worst case there may be a no-deal situation and you'd need a visum to go to France...

No drastic measures here in The Netherlands yet. Today the counter of infections stands at 40 and no fatalities yet.
